Petrovaradinska Tvrdjava

Description

Petrovaradinskaya Fortress is an outstanding example of fortification construction of the XVIII century, which is one of the most complex, largest and best preserved artillery bastion fortifications in this part of Europe. It occupies the space of the northern slopes of the Fruska Mountain, located on the right bank of the Danube. With an altitude of 125 meters above sea level, it occupies a dominant position over the southeastern part of the Pannonian plain. The fortress covers an area of more than 100 hectares and has a total length of the outer line of defense of 5,200 meters. Inside the fortress there is a complex system of underground military galleries with mine and eavesdropping tunnels, which are located on four levels and have a total length of more than 16,000 meters. The fortress combines the harmony and monumentality of military architecture and the natural environment, which makes it unique in style and design. Today it is a symbol of the protection of the modern city, which owes its origin and development to this fortress.
