Description

The old walls and gates of the Nis Fortress, which are located on the right bank of the Nisava River, are among the most beautiful and well-preserved in the middle Balkans. Their history dates back to the first half of the 18th century, when Roman legions paved the way to the new world civilization. The fortress was built by Romans, Byzantines and Serbs, and has been rebuilt and reconstructed many times. In 1730 it took its final form, reflecting Ottoman architecture. Niš is one of the few cities in the world where the fortress is at the very center, and its center of gravity has not shifted for two millennia. In addition to the massive stone walls and gates, the fortress shows many traces of the turbulent history of the city of Niš.
