Description
Located on the banks of the Danube opposite Novi Sad in Serbia, the Petrovaradin Fortress is a significant cultural heritage site. Founded in 1692 by Prince Croix to protect the Habsburg Empire from the Ottoman army, the fortress served as an important strategic point. Its impressive walls, more than five kilometers long, and an extensive system of underground passages provided reliable protection, which earned it the name "Gibraltar on the Danube".
In the mid-20th century, the fortress lost its military significance and was recognized as a cultural heritage site. Today, the Petrovaradin Fortress is a center of cultural and social life, housing a museum, city archives, a planetarium and an observatory, as well as exhibition halls and artists' studios. Various events are regularly held here, including wine and music festivals. Since 2001, the fortress has become the venue for the international music festival Exit, attracting thousands of visitors.
