About event

The play "Akademija Smeha", staged at the Atelier 212 theater, is a unique dramatic work by Japanese writer Koki Mitani. Based on historically true facts, this play takes the viewer to the beginning of World War II, when the Japanese government introduced the position of theater censor. It is against this background that a comedy unfolds, touching on important issues of freedom of speech, creativity and the state's attitude to art.

The plot centers on the confrontation between a theater censor and a playwright, whose plays are subject to strict verification. Mitani masterfully constructs dialogues and situations, forcing the viewer to think about how important creative freedom is and how censorship affects art. Comedy not only entertains, but also raises deep philosophical questions that are relevant at any time.

Almost 50 years after its premiere in Tokyo, "Akademija Smeha" entered the repertoire of the Serbian theater Atelier 212. This event was a real challenge for two talented actors who brilliantly embody Mitani's characters on stage. Their performance allows the audience to feel all the nuances and depth of the play, making the performance unforgettable.

Koki Mitani, born in Tokyo in 1961, is not only a playwright, but also a screenwriter, actor and director. Having graduated from the drama department of Tokyo Nihon University, he has received many awards, including Japan's Order of the Purple Necklace. The premiere of "Akademija Smeha" took place at the Tokyo Aoyama Theater and was awarded the prestigious Japanese theater prize Yoimuri. The play was also made into a film directed by Hoshi Mamoru.
